they are traditional vestments worn over his trousers. they are not worn unless he is going out to say mass or preform official duties. when he is in private he wears trousers and even jeans sometimes!

the shoes a pope wears are red in honour of the millions of maryters who'd died in Christ's name - that they will always remember they too are to live their life as a martyr and do all and offer all to God in His name.
