This is going to sound VERY nasty but it is very common in cats and dogs alike...his anal glands probably need to be sqeezed. They are little sacks on either side of his butt. I have some links here that tell more about it and the second one has a picture to show where they are. Beware if you do it your self do it in the bath tub so you can give the dog a bath afterward b/c it stinks and will get stuck in it's hair. You can also have your vet or groomer do it for you. This can become very serious if that is what your dog has. These glands can rupture and get infected. If you want you can look at your dogs butt to see if it looks raw or irritated if it is then this is the problem. I would have it done whether it's you or your vet it won't hurt anything just to be sure.

He may have worms, but more likely it's impacted anal glands.
Try having him set in a very warm (not hot!) bath to drain them. If this doesn't help, take him to the vet to have them expressed, and for a fecal test for worms.

Maybe. The next time he goes to the bathroom look at his stool. If you see anything in it that looks like rice or string, get him dewormed.
He could also be trying to drain the anal glands. I know, yuck. But it's what they do.
One last thing. He might just be scratching his butt...he has no hands to reach back there!

It is a good indication of worms, possibly a anal glad issue. Yes i know that sounds yucky, but dog can get impacted anal glands. You will need to see a vet about it if that is what it is.

He could have impacted anal glands and they need to be squeezed and have the fluid expressed. This is messy and the dog doesn't like it but it will help.

That is a sign of worms, but he doesn't neccesarily have them.
Bring him to the vet to find out for sure.
