Depends on where you live and what you are wearing. Most European women do not. Most North American women do. I don't know about other areas.

The cleanliness issue is really silly - if you wash, it's clean, with or without hair. Hair is not dirty unless left unwashed.

I shave mine in the summer to conform to North American standards if I am wearing a sleevless shirt, If I'm wearing sleeves, I do not. My husband mildly prefers unshaven because he lived in Europe a lot and shaven looks weird to him.

I think this is still particular to North American and western European culture, but I would be really interested in hearing from someone with experience in other regions of the world about this.

So in North America, anyway...... Given that men are NOT expected to shave their underarms, can someone give a good reason why women ARE expected to?

absolutely a cultural, predominantly "western" cultural phenomenon. did not quite take position to any degree till the mid 1900s and commonly contained in the united states of a. No genuine reason to finish that, in spite of the indisputable fact that the "sleeveless" kinds of clothing that began contained in the overdue Nineteen Nineteen Forties and early Fifties besides because the creation of the protection razor throughout the time of that particular same time period for sure had a lot to do with the idea of underarm shaving. earlier to then you definitely did not see underarms in public, and till now the protection razor became invented, everyone used a instantly razor. It became puzzling adequate to shave the face, and almost not accessible to apply one to shave the underarms besides.
