A boundary line is used almost exclusively in graphing linear inequalities.

So if you had the inequality y>2x-4, the equation y = 2x-4 would be the equation of the boundary line.

These lines are either dotted or solid depending on if the inequality has a equal component or not. (Dotted line have > or < or not equal to & Solid lines are less than or equal to or greater than or equal to.)

Once you have graphed the boundary line, you pick two points on either side of the line to test. If the point that you picked makes the original inequality true, you would shade your graph to include the side that has that point.
