It made the Union "anti-slavery", and the Confederacy "pro-slavery". It was a political document. It's purpose was to deny the Confederacy foreign allies, since Europe of the time had already outlawed slavery, and could not, therefore, render active aid to a State that supported slavery.

Actually, Abraham Lincoln was more interested in 'preserving the Union' that freeing the slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation was largely an attempt to get slaves to fight on behalf of the North using the promise of freedom as an incentive.

It was a step - not a law like a lot of people think - towards freeing the slaves. It was a statement of purpose, of why the war was being fought and what the plan was for after the war.
It had not power in the south (confederacy) but gave the north (union) some moral support.

Lincoln was a separatist. He believed in separate but equal. He freed the slaves to punish the south. There were slaves in the north. Black people owned slaves too. It was wrong as an institution, but get the facts straight. I am black so I hope you won't see me as a racist. Lincoln was not our "Savior".
