Essays are usually shorter than reports, and can contain opinion and editorializing.
Reports commonly contain "just the facts, Ma'am."

essays are usually about 5 paragraphs long
introduction (para. 1): this is where you describe your topic and usually bring up atleast 3 facts/opinions/debates and prepare for the next paragraph.
paragraphs 2-4: these paragraphs are where you you take each separate argument and detail it explaining why or how or what etc.
conclusion (para. 5): this is where you make your summation and basically BS your way to an ending.
i think essays are more based on personal opinions after you have read all the facts. example: who do you think the best presidential candidate is? and why?
Reports shouldn't really contain the words "i think" it's based solely on researched material. A report is basically targeting one specific thing and then breaking it down into different categories, and it should be factual to the best of your knowledge. more times than not it involves a table of contents and a list of your sources. A reporter delivers the facts as we know it.

Without writing an entire report or essay on the subject, the simplest way to describe the difference is this:
A report is a usually detailed account of an event or subject containing data and facts without personal opinion.
An essay is an analytical or interpretative composition usually dealing with its subject from a limited or personal point of view.
