when i take a digital picture with my sony dsc-t1, the picture comes out looking smeared. ideas?

The picture looks like a painting where the paint has been allowed to run. Very strange effect. I am trying to decide if it is a minor repair or something big.

Yes, hold the camera steady for a couple of seconds AFTER you take the picture. Shutter lag...
