The Eastern & the Rio Grande are two of the 5 sub-species of wild turkey found in North America. The other subs are the Osceola, the Mirriam's and the Gould's. The Gould's lives primarily in Mexico, with small populations in Arizona & New Mexico. The Osceola lives in Florida. The main differences between the sub species are appearance and habitat (or location).

Additionally, there is a related bird called the oscellated turkey that lives in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
