Dominant means they appear more frequently than recessive.
For a recessive gene to appear, you generally require both parents to have it.
Dominants appear if either parent has it.

A tricky question.
By quick inspection, its natural to say that Dominantly heritable traits should be more common.
However, there are exceptions. For example, Blood type O (a recessive trait) is the most common blood type.

Here's a real life answer. Maybe the exception rather than the rule.
I have brown hair and brown eyes. My parents have brown hair and eyes. My grandfather had brown eyes and hair. My grandmother has red hair and blue eyes.
My husband has green eyes and brown hair. His parents have light hair and blue and green eyes. I don't know about his grandparents.
Now, brown hair and eyes are supposed to be dominant, but
our 3 kids...
1) blonde hair and hazel eyes
2) light brown hair and blue eyes
3) brown hair and brown eyes
