Take him there, but keep him on the leash to see how he reacts to the other dogs. If anything goes wrong, it will be easier to control him if he is on the leash.

How old is he? Has he been around other dogs? Has he been to obedience training? If he's been socialized so that he's not skittish around other people or dogs, and he's trained enough to come when you call him, then you should be fine. If not then you need to get him in some training classes first and socialize him before taking him to a dog park or beach.
The biggest problems you'll encounter will be other people's untrained dogs. Even if your dog is fine, you can't account for other people's dogs and if they put your dog in a postition where he feels threatened, even though he's docile, he will react. My dog's trainer has the best behaved and most well-trained dogs in the world but she will not take them to a dog park because of other people's obnoxious dogs. For her the risk is not worth it. It's something you need to be careful of when you have a large breed dog.
I also see a lot of people on here recommending that you keep your dog on lead. If he is fearful of other dogs that's probably the worst thing that you could do. When your dog is tethered to you he feels that you've "got his back" more or less. It's actually called leash aggression. This may actually bring out aggressions in your dog. This is why your dog needs to be trained so that you have control if something should go wrong. With nothing more than a verbal command you should be able to stop him from doing whatever it is that he is doing and come to you when called.
Good luck!

DONT leave him on the leash at the dog park! Perfectly dog friendly dogs often get leash aggression. Since they are the only ones leashed that automatically makes the other dogs more dominant and that will make your dog nervous most likely. He might behave aggressively just because he is nervous.
I would walk him around the fence before you go inside and see how he will react. If he seems calm and ready to play, try it out.
If you would rather test him out somewhere else, take him to Petco and see how he reacts to strangers, other dogs and many diifferent dog scents.
Good luck and have a great time!

Have you taken him anywhere like to the pet store with you? Has he been to the vet? Make sure he is up to date on all shots before he goes, just to be on the safe side. Take him on a walk around your neighborhood. If he is ok with that, then take him to the dog park, keep him on a retractable leash at least for the first few times, or until he learns voice commands.

I am not sure how your dog park works, but at the one near my house it has two fenced in areas. One is for smaller and older dogs, and one is for larger dogs. If there are two or more places for you and they are sharing a fence, then you could bring your dog to an empty area and let him get to know the other dogs through a fence. If this is not the case, then you can keep your dog on a leash and let him get used to the idea of the other dogs. I have found that taking our dogs to the dog park can be fun, both to see your dog interact with others, and to talk to other dog owners. Good luck!

German Shepards must be made to be mean. Isn't that right? If they are the classic seeing eye dog, I would feel pretty confident, but don't just let him run around without a leash the first time. Also, some other nasty dog could pick a fight with him. So, be careful.

Have you ever had him around other dogs? Does he show any aggression toward them on leash or off? If not, I'd say take him and just be prepared to take control if anything goes wrong. Chances are he'll be fine.

If he's good at home, he should be good at the dog park. If he seems to not like other dogs, don't take him, but otherwise just watch him very carefully.

HOW IS HE WITH OTHER DOGS WHILE WALKING ON LEASH? FIRST FEW TRIPS, KEEP HIM ON A LEASH AND BE PREPARED TO INTERVENE. I'VE NOTICED MOST DOGS AT THE PARKS ARE WELL BEHAVED. YOU WON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY.
