Our adopted cat Herbie, who we think is about 10 and came with our house that we bought a couple of years ago, has recently started falling off things now and again. He hasn't seem injured at all (apart from his pride), and the only other changes in his behaviour are he seems more chatty, and more docile and sleepy. Its probably nothing to worry about, especially as he might just be getting older and more chilled out, but I just wanted to be sure that he was ok. Any thoughts?

I would take him to the vet just for a general check up. Cats are very good at masking symptoms. I recently took my cat (who's 4) in to the vet for a check up and he ended up with all his teeth pulled. He might have an inner ear infection which infects his balance.

I can help you figure out what is wrong if you would like me to. I own a very large farm with lots of different animals which I encounter problems like this often. I am also very educated in the medical field with animals. I am at mfroeh@yahoo.com if you would like to talk. 10 is not that old for a well kept cat. I have a female now that just turned 21. She is very healthy and still will play at times. She has never been a mother but loves the new kittens. Don't get to upset about this going on. He might have an ear infection going on or ear mites. Does he go outside? Check his ears real good for anything strange. I know this doesn't help much but without talking to you about certain things its really hard to say for sure..

Vets are now considering cats "senior" at eight years of age. After that age they should have a yearly vet exam and blood work done to catch any of the senior problems that cats can have as they get older. Even if there is nothing wrong it gives the vet and you a "baseline" for Herbie's health.

So I hope that you will do this for Herbie and certainly take up your concerns about his falling with his doctor.

You really shouldn't be worried, depending on how high Herbie is falling. If it is higher than 4 feet, take precautions!

You should take him to the vet, definitely. Our cat that we had when I was younger began to fall off things. It turned out he had a large benign tumor in his ear, which was affecting his sense of balance. He had the tumor removed, regained his sense of balance, and lived for years more.

end using the claw covers. I trim my cats' claws instead and grant them with scratching posts. If that's no longer achievable for you, i might then declaw the cat. Why make him go through all of the time.

I guess I'm wondering why you aren't asking your vet this question.

Well i'd ask mself, is he landing on his feet or other place? If he is landing on his feet, he will be fine. if not, tell his vet ASAP!!!
