He must have been something.

Please don't make my question an occasion for more stupid Islam bashing.

I am disappointed that there have been so many replies by mindless bigots. I have already reported two of you and I hope you get banned.

I asked my question in good faith because I believe it is good for everyone to learn as much as possible about each other's religions. This should be done with respect and reverence. I have already chosen my best answer so if there are any more stupid bigots out there please answer someone else's question.

There has been nothing said of what his religion was before him recieving Revalation. If even if he had one, it doesn't make a difference. He was upon the religion of Abraham-Prophet Ibraheem, and he was sent down to complete it, and was sent down for the whole of mankind as other Prophets were only sent down for their nation, but the Prophet Muhammad was sent down for the whole of mankind. And he was a Muslim just like all the Prophets were.
Islaam.....

Praise be to Allaah.

Islam means submitting to Allaah, worshipping Him alone and obeying Him, and shunning shirk (polytheism, associating others with Allaah) and those who believe in that. This is the religion which Allaah approves for His slaves. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Truly, the religion with Allaah is Islam”

[Aal- ‘Imraan 3:19]

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:85]

The person who enters this religion is called a Muslim (one who submits), because he has submitted (aslama) to all the rulings that have come from Allaah and from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And who turns away from the religion of Ibraaheem (Abraham) (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.

When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!’ He said, ‘I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists).’” [al-Baqarah 2:130-131]

“Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allaah (i.e. follows Allaah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin ( a doer of good who does good deeds solely for the sake of Allaah) then his reward is with his Lord (Allaah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve”

[al-Baqarah 2:112].

That's what basically all the other Prophets were, they submitted themselves submisevly to the will of Allaah.

All I know is that Prophet Muhammad didn't like the idols, the false beliefs and doings of people. He however confirms the Judaism and Christianity. He confirms their Holy books and the prophecies in those books. Basically he belonged to the Religion of Abraham and Ismail. In Quran, it also confirms that Prophet Muhammad is not from Israel but from Ibrahim (Abraham).

A very good question. I don't know but you must remember that there were a number of religious sects about at the time as there still are in the middle east based on written and oral texts on which the old testament, the Koran and the Torah are based so he probably belonged to one of those sects

He came from a pagan background and there is no evidence to show any continuity with previous revelation from God. His 'pedigree' is seriously in question.

Islam follows in the line of the bondwoman and her son and is outside the covenant of promise but follows a covenant of works which produces bondage. Ironically 'Islam' is said to mean, submission. Although they rightly claim Abraham as their father they do not walk in his steps nor follow his example.

As a generality, he who is born after the flesh (outward, temporal, sight) persecutes he who is born after the Spirit (inward, eternal, faith). As it was before, so it is today.

Both these elements are strongly represented in Islam, works and bondage & persecution.

No doubt envy, which is at the bottom of many troubles, is responsible.

He was a pagan like the majority of the people in the Arabian penisula at the time. Arabia had been untouched by Christianity, so it was ripe for a religious revolution, brought by Mohammed who destroyed the Temples of 360 different pagan Arabian gods.

"He did not wholly reject Judaism and Christianity, two other monotheistic faiths known to the Arabs, but said that he had been sent by God in order to complete and perfect those teachings." I guess he was a pagan who was aware of other beliefs.
