What I mean is that my last fairly long relationship was 3 years ago, since then I've had about 3 which have lasted a month or two, when I say how long I've been single do I refer to the last short one which was a couple of months ago? What do you do? Sorry for the long-winded explanation.

if you've never been married, you've always been single. if you were married and now divorced you call yourself divorced if your spouse died your a widow/ widower .but i would use the last short relationship to tell people when you were last in one.

It just simply means that you are explaining yourself to others where you don't really have to. There is no indication in this statement that says you have had either long or short term relationships in your past, all it is referring to is that you are now available for a relationship - that is it.

People read into that whatever they want to, but there is no further information given and whether you have been single for a week or a month, doesn't reveal the nature of the relationship you had had with another person. It only gives some indication of how long it may have taken you to have recovered from leaving that person, but if the person reading it was biased, would want to have some indication of how long it took you to have gotten over the other person.

You sometimes get people who place adverts looking for love and saying something like "divorced man" - this is saying something like I am divorced, but this is how I consider myself as "divorced" rather than just "I am a single man" some people would think that a man saying that he is divorced as not being quite over another person.

The titles we give ourselves is a reflection usually of where we are in our life and how we define ourselves according to our self-esteem and whether we are moved on or not.

if you are looking for another long relationship and you think the other peron might be aswell say i was in a long relationship which ended three years ago and if not its up to you. but you dont want to give the impression you are a tart who only stays with someone til you get bored of the sex or something if you want to start something a little full on.

Good luck though

You could say you have been single for 3 years, but have seen a couple of people during this time. Its really your business how you explain it to others.

It's up to you what you tell someone.
Just say I'm newly single or I've been single a couple months and just leave it at that.

Well, it hardly matters in the grand scheme of things, so if you're uncomfortable discussing it, give them a vague answer and move on. Nosy buggers.
