1.2 Billion Dollars could employ 2,000 border officers for the next 20 years. What do you want, the Fence or the Jobs?

First of course all the money allocated is not going for the fence, alot is going for equipment and roads that the Border Patrol has asked for.

And only partial funding has been approved at this point, and most of that money is for the planning and other needs of the border patrol

But 2000 more officers is not even a start, they need about 30,000 more if they are really going to secure the border.

What they need is the army on the border, fully armed.

But yes a real fence is a good idea but what was done today, we will never see much fence from that deal

I was all for a fence. But this new statistic of jobs makes me not so sure...and the more I think about it, I have lots of questions:

Which is more productive to the cause? How efficient would 2000 border officers be? How many officers do we have now, and would the 2000 be added to that number, or would that number reflect the number of persons protecting the border today?

What's the fence made out of? Is it a material that will need regular maintenance and upkeep? How much will that cost American taxpayers each year? Have you ever seen a Mexican jump a fence? (They're good)

I think I will have to find the answers to all these questions before I can truly say I am for or against a fence.

I had rather pay taxes for the fence and more law enforcement than to social services, food stamps and medical cards for the illegals. Electrify the fence, give the border guards UZI's and a license to shoot first and question later and lots of vicious hungry dogs. Fine the businesses that hire the illegals to the maximum and buy more fence and guards and dogs. This would stop the wetbacks. I am not against immigration, there needs to be some order and regulation in the numbers allowed into the US. If they want the milk and honey go about it the right way. Breaking the law is breaking the law. If I speed and get caught I pay the fine. Let businesses do the same or get rid of the law. Prosecute all illegals or get rid of the law. Get rid of the law and let me speed...Only fair.

I think the border fence is a bad idea. Mexicans are some of the most resourceful and creative people around. I'm sure they'll pole vault over or cut through the fence in order to serve you better.

A complete waste of taxpayer money. It's a convenient gimmick to give the public the impression that we're getting tough on illegal immigration, that the current administration is responsive and pro-active, but it's just one more expensive illusion that future generations will work hard for to pay off with their tax monies, and the fence will one day be torn down or rust away anyway.

Hiring more officers with little or no authority would be rather pointless, but then again so would a fence. Maybe if we hold the Mexican govt. responsible for the resources used to capture and house their people, maybe then they will do something other than facilitate these criminals from crossing the boarder.

For the border fence, already promised the border agents a long time ago.

Complete waste of $$$. 700 miles of fence on a 2,100 mile border. WTF??

All we REALLY need to do is enforce the employment laws already on the books. If employers were hit with max fines for employing undocumented workers, the problem would clear up all by itself.

Keeping the jobs makes too much sense.

Bush will therefore go on with the fence

I don't think it will help. We have to get the companies that are hiring these illegals to stop hiring them. This will take the need for them to cross the border. When there is no jobs waiting for them they won't need to come for work. Most problems are solved by checking the money.
