My brother, who is only 20 years old, is going to join the marines. My family is very scared about this. From what I know, the marines are the ones on the front lines, and once you sign up, most-likely will be shipped off to Iraq. Is this true? And what are some opinions on joining the marines?

I just wanted to add that I don't know very much about this issue, and would like honest info or facts. Thanks!

Nope, the war's going to be over before any new recruits will get to Iraq, if Bush actually keeps his word...(not likely). But my cousin joined the marines a couple months ago and he's only about 100 miles away in training.

Ok, assuming that he is leaving for Boot Camp the day after he actually enlists, assuming that he makes it through Boot Camp with no problems, and assuming he goes 0311 and makes it through SOI with no problems, he still won't be deployed to Iraq for at least another 6-10 months, and that is the fastest track to Iraq there is in the Corps. If he picks a different MOS, say for example the Band, then he might never go to Iraq. I've got bros scattered all over the world and some of them have never left the States, while others have requested to stay in Iraq for at least two tours. Even if he does get deployed to the sandbox, that doesn't mean that he will see combat. I've got a buddy that did a year over there with her reserve unit and the most exciting/dangerous thing that happened during her whole tour was when a donkey went wild in the middle of the town market.
If your brother has the heart and soul to do it, then tell him good luck and Semper Fi. If he's really 20 then he's had time to carefully weigh his options, and he should know exactly what's he's getting into, so I better not hear him on the news saying "I didn't know that they were going to make me go." We leave that whiny crap for the dogfaces, the Corps is there because we want to finish the fight before we go home.

There are no guarantees about where he'll be be shipped, no matter what the recruiter tells him. The US is likely to stay at war for sometime. We have lots of enemies and and are a world power. I think all you can do is present the facts and then support him as best you can-he'll need it. Yes, the Marines can be tough. My son's dad was in Vietnam and it took years for him to get used to society again even though he got lots of medals and wasn't personally shot, lots of his friends were. To this day, he has a hard time with even friendly relationships. The Marine training involves brainwashing simply because it has to- so the soldier is able to kill. Also, soldiers do lose some civil rights. You might search some websites for more info-here's one from the other side: Good Luck!

May as well join now with the hint of a promise at a decent MOS. (Military Occupation Specialty) And if he is promised anything by a recruiter such as a guaranteed MOS, get it in WRITING. They will try to weasel out of it and say "trust us", but do NOT believe the recruiters. They are salesmen and the worst type too. They promise anything to get the body. So get it in writing.

Not all Marines are combat, but your civilian test scores make a big difference when they decide where you'll be best suited.

Good luck to you and your family, and after this wall goes up with the resultant border controls, look for the draft. That is what the wall is really about, don't be fooled.

Peace.

Whether or not he's on the front lines depends on his job. But I will say that he is probably at more risk of being in the brunt of combat if he joins the Marines than if he joins the Air Force or Navy. I wish him all the best.

this question is a lot like asking what automobile you may purchase. it quite relies upon on the motive force. what variety of motive force are you? See, no person yet you are able to answer that query. people look at us in yet differently than the army, by way of fact of our attractiveness. A random individual on the line won't comprehend you, yet they are going to comprehend which you're a Marine, and that's all that concerns. Why? by way of Marine Corps attractiveness. This attractiveness wasn't given, it became earned. Honor, braveness and dedication. those are the middle values of the Marine Corps. there's a clarification for our "Meat shields" attractiveness too. we are referred to as that by way of fact we are turning out to be shot at each and all the time. Why? by way of fact we are on the frontlines. (First to combat, final to depart) Now, in case you sense strongly approximately turning out to be a member of the army, then do no longer enable anybody supply up you from doing that, yet ask your self this, once you look at your self in the replicate, do you want to confirm your self as a Soldier, or as a Marine, by way of fact in the top, while each little thing is long previous, the only comprehend that continues to be with you is self comprehend. words like devil dogs and Leathernecks define who we are as a Corps, yet no longer who we are as somebody. what variety of guy or woman are you? Are you a devil dogs? prepare it then, and connect the Corps. If no longer, then connect the army. bear in recommendations, we can basically instruction manual you, the final judgment is on your palms.

I have been in for 21 years and joined up when I was 18. I would not change a thing about joining.
If he does join, then he is almost guaranteed a trip to Iraq. It is what we do. We follow the orders of the President of the United States.
And Erudite is a liar. Erudite does not know the meaning of dedication and sacrifice. I am sure that he can quote a definition of those words, but he does not know what it truelly means to exhibit those qualities.

Marines are the first in and the last out, this is true, which is why they are considered to be some of Americas bravest, however the likely hood of him going to Iraq immediately after BT is rather small, I think they want people with more training over there.

But God bless him for wanting to serve.

Joining the Marine Corps is your brother's decision and his alone. The experience will be what he makes it. The United States Marine Corps is a very proud organization and it takes its job very seriously. I wish him well.
Semper Fi.

i'm retired usnavy so here are the facts. if he joins the marines he is going to catch hell like he never dreamed of. next after he finishes boot camp he is definately going straight to iraq you can bet on it. they are going to fill his head with all kinds of options but the facts are he is going to be doing what the marines want him to do and nothing else. he would be much better off joining the navy or the airforce. if he feels that he has to join something. you may e-mail me if you like at roy40372@yahoo.com
