Medications can help. I advise you to find a good psychiatrist (don't go to your GP for this). I would also recommend some therapy, either individual or group sessions.

Use caution when approaching psychotherapy, as for me it ruined my life. Psychotherapy can be useful to some, but keep in mind it you tread onto open water and dredge up what could be a past laced with hurt and pain.
I innocently approached this after an ad in my paper stated "do you have vivid memories of past sexual abuse", and what started out as a quest for answers to my past, it turned into days and months of solid tears, black depression and a 9-yr walk through hell. I often thought, did I enter into this with open or closed eyes.
But once again, do not go on my experience. There are many competent therapists out there, and it's easy to look back and think why didn't I run out of there as fast as I could. Hindsight is 20/20.
I crawled through the depressive years and was finally diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. I am on the correct meds for this disorder and after 9 years am doing wonderfully. Thank goodness for good doctoring.
Best of luck, but buyer beware.

First Go to a specialist. Talk about it. and remember its not your fault. Xanax can relieve some of the symtoms. you will need a doctors precriction for this , also ambien for sleep helped me forget the terrible things that happened to me.

The thing that helped most with my PTSD was seeing a rape crisis counselor. She helped a lot. I also went on Ativan, and Celexa.

the ptsd workbook by mary beth williams is excellent and reccommended my many people. you could search the internet for forums, and i found cognitive behavioural therapy fairly effective...give it time, its not something you can recover from quickly, nor is it something that goes away if ignored. good luck.
