Is there a way to get a list of excommunication groups and orgs? I was reading about excommunication on wiki and listed a few(including Call to Action, the Society of St. Pius X, and DeMolay International.) I am curious as to what, why and when these happen?

I believe even Mother Teresa's organisation was rejected for a short time, when she first started because she went against the "norm" of what Nuns were "supposed" to do and how they they were supposed to behave....

I don't think there is an excommunication list but you could try the Vatican or United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Any Catholic group or person who deliberately turns against the dogma and doctrine of the Catholic Church is automatically excommunicated. Basically they excommunicate themselves. Actual specific excommunications by the Church are pretty rare.

SSPX was excommunicated when their bishop started ordaining priests without permission.

The DeMolay is masonic.

Call To Action supports abortion.

You may be able to get some insight through www.ewtn.com (or maybe .org, I am not sure anymore), better than what wiki can offer.

The why is usually a tremendous defiance of fundamental Catholic belief, and refusal to come into line when confronted with this fact...such as ordaning women as priests.
