The difference is that Mohammed's successor should have been Ali. When Mohammed died, Ali with others was busy burying our beloved Prophet. Meanwhile, the three first caliphs (Abu Bakir, Umar & Uthman) were gathering with some to appoint Abu Bakir the successor. When Ali came to the 'meeting' he was surprised that they did not follow what Mohammed told them "to appoint Ali". Ali did not join them and went home. Some Muslims joined him and did not approve of this appointment, hence they were called Shia, meaning the ones who backed Ali. The other who backed the other choice are called Sunnis. It is on that day, Muslims became two groups. Very unfortunate. Other than this, the difference is not significant.
On Judgment Day, we will know who is right & who is wrong.
Brother Abdulaziz: Shia do follow the Sunnah, that was not kind to say so. You do not know much about them.
Dear Sara: What an accusation??!! Shia do not believe in Ali as a Prophet, some adore him too much, but never said he is a Prophet. Get your facts right, dear.

90% of muslims are sunni. Shia islam is a cult only really found in iraq and iran, may Allah guide them. They curse the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them) and they do not adhere to the Sunnah of the Messenger. Their deviance varies in degrees, the very extreme form have left the fold of islam according to the Ulama.

In essence they believe that Ali should have been the first Khalifa, as a result they curse Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman who proceeded him. There are several statements of Ali praising these three Sahaba. The position of Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman has also been made very clear by the Prophet Muhammad. All 3 were promised Jannah (heaven). Despite this the Shia still curse them, and say they betrayed the Messenger (pbuh)

Sunni people believe that Prophet Mohamed (Peace upon him) is the Prophet of Islam..shia believes that their is a Prophet after Prophet Mohamed who is his cousin Ali ( Satisfy on him) but they are not true because Prophet Mohamed was the last Prophet and Koran didn't mention that his cousin Ali will be after him.
