I have a male and a female chihuahua. My female gave birth to three beautiful, healthy , puppies 71/2 weeks ago. When we let them out to play, supervised of course, they playfully chase after him and he gets a little scared and not sure what's going on. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can help him get over his fear? By the way, he's not aggressive toward them in any way, and he'll sniff them , if we hold the puppy up to him, but just gets a little nervous when they get too close!!! Serious Answers Only Please! Thanks!!!

He may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. Just give it time, like you would if you brought in any new animal. Remember the male doesn't have the "parental" instincts that the female has.

Why not call your breeder mentor or other members of the Chi group and talk to them about it? They are usually fabulous sources of information since they've been there, done that. Or, talk to other people at the dog shows that you show in, they also should have some great ideas for you. You do have a breeder mentor and know people from dog shows, right? After all, no ethical breeder would breed a non-champion dog or consider getting into breeding without club membership and a breeder mentor. . .

Perhaps try and let one puppy at a time in the yard with him. That way he's not being charged at by all 3 at the same time.

he is probably surprised by all of their rambunctious energy and not used to being chased like that. Time will change that, and as she said, they don't have maternal instincts like the mother.
