Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. The Month of Ramadan is also when it is believed the Holy Quran "was sent down from heaven, a guidance unto men, a declaration of direction, and a means of Salvation"
Fasting teaches self-control, encourages a focus on prayer and the life of the spirit, and allows practitioners to devote their attention to worship, and draw closer to God.

Wikipedia states:
"The most prominent event of this month is the fasting practiced by all observant Muslims. The fasting during Ramadan has been so predominant in defining the month that some have been led to believe the name of this month, Ramadan, is the name of Islamic fasting, when in reality the Arabic term for fasting is sawm."

Ramadan is a special month for moslem because the Quran (Koran) first verses were received by the Prophet during this month. moslems fast during ramadan because it was an obligation for them (God ask them to do so) as stated in Quran, just like people of other religion did. Fasting during ramadan is mandatory for adult moslems and those who are healthy; if someone skipped it (because of sickness), it has to be replaced during other month; or if someone cannot fast because of his/her age, they should pay "fidiah" (serve meals for the poor) as a compensation. However, ramadan fasting is not the only fasting done by moslems (there are many more fastings, but these other fastings are not mandatory).

It's actually to remind the Muslims about all those people out there who are less fortunate to have reqular meals. To me, it brings me closer to my family. It makes me special in a sort of way. The 2 good things we (Muslims) get when they fast is :
They will meet God in Heaven...
And when it's around 7pm, (i.e. when they can it) It's just a meal and they will taste the delicacy! Eg. (Wow, delicious. After a whole day...)

Ramdh in Arabic, is extreme heat. As you know Islam started in Saudi Arabia, a desert of hot climate. This month we stop eating, drinking and marital contact (man + wife) from sunrise to sunset. After that back to normal life until sunrise again.
It is to know the feeling of being hungry and deprive oneself of the other pleasures. It is like a test to humans, are they able to live the coarse life.
