I foil (weave colours in using foil) my sisters hair and she does mine. You really need a friend or someone to do it for you and as long as their technique is right it should be ok.
you will need~strips of foil
a tail end comb
colour or 2
bowl(for the colour)
brush to apply the colour
First pin your hair up, then take a section down (a straight line going around your head) as thick or thin as you want it (thinner if you want more of the colour in your hair) Now split that section into 3 (back, and either side) Then you weave the tail end comb through the section. Keep all the hair that's on top of the comb and drop the rest (the wider the strips of hair you have left on the comb, the bolder it will be. If you want a good blend, when you weave the comb through make sure you pick up narrow pieces) Now place the strip of foil under the hair you want to colour and paint the dye on with the brush then fold the foil up. Continue this process in rows until you've done the whole head. Follow the instructions on your colour for timings.

Try using the tail of your comb to pick up alternate pieces of hair and the lay these bits of hair on strips of foil and paste them with the hair colour of your choice fold the strip over and continue this process at random over your whole head . Leave the colour to develop according to the directions on the colour box.

What's your idea? I would advise against this! If you mess up and try to fix it at home it will only get worse! And at that point if you try going to a salon to have it fixed they will charge you up the a**! Some salons offer deals on foils just through the top. With 7 strategically placed foils it can appear that your whole head is done when your hair is down.
