This person bring lunch for everyone and this is an informal setting (small office.) After an hour, I need to get back to work. How do I cut the lunch off at one hour or is it rude to start working while they talk?

What to do? Being rude is not a possibility (so please don't suggest it).

Thanks in advance!

It is not rude to excuse yourself and go back to work. You are obligated to only take the time allotted for lunch. Unless a manager designates that is a special occasion.

Thank the salesperson for their generosity, but explain that your lunch break is only an hour long and you really can't afford to make it any longer. You love visiting with them, but you have a lot of work that needs to get done. Tell them you're looking forward to their next visit.

I totally understand your need to not be rude...office etiquette is so touchy! Excusing yourself with something like "Sorry, but I have to 'earn' my pay" would be very offensive, as if you are finger pointing at those who are staying are NOT earning their pay.

All too often I feel this happens, so try to just excuse yourself to the bathroom. It's a good idea to wash up after lunch anyhow, but more importantly, your absence will make it relevant that it's time to get back to the matters at hand. Upon your return, if everyone is still gathered, just start working excuse free.

Explain that your lunch is only 1 hour and that you have to go back to work.

Now you know why they say, there's no free lunch! You're paying for that lunch with your time.
At the end of an hour, simply look at your watch, and say, "Oh, my gosh! Time's gone so fast -- I've gotta get back to my desk now, but thanks for the lunch."

No, it isn't rude if you first excuse yourself.

What IS rude is a salesperson who disrupts the entire office for two and a half hours! I hope your boss doesn't buy much from their company!!

does the company this person works for know he/she is doing this?
start working while the salesperson is there. you are there to work to make money to pay your bills. what is this person doing? wasting your time.

If you're not a vital part of the meeting, it's probably safe for you to get back to work, but talk it over with your boss. And if your immediate supervisor leaves, it's safe to say you can, too.

Be honest - honestly is not rude. "Thank you so much for lunch, unfortunately I HAVE to get back to work." And then do so.
