True mental illness is physical. That being said environment can cause someone to present with profound symptoms of mental illness. Its a two edged sword; most organic mental illness responds to medication of some type while non-organic symptoms respond only to cognative or other behavioral therpy and medication can actually make matters worse.

The enviroment does not cause mental illness Genetics can however, I have seen whole families were 50% of the family members have mental illness. they used to say when i worked in a mental hospital that it will sometimes skip a generation. in some extreme cases were the environment is very hostile such as being kidnapped, held in a cell, tortured, a person can become mentally ill from his surroundings. some people who have a great deal of stress in their life suffer from a lot of anxiety and other problems but this does not usually turn into a full blown mental illness stressfull situations can cause symptoms to appear but does not cause the mental illness the mental illness
has to be there first

Different research shows different things. Some illnesses or disorders are genetic, some are chemical imbalances, and others are induced by circumstances. My husband is bi-polar. It runs in the family. However, he is doing better now on a nutritional product and is off all medications. They caused many side-effects that were not pleasant. Both of his parents commited suicide. They were being treated with medication. I am thankful for the person who shared these nutritional products with us. They have changed our families lives. 205-425-8586

Some milder mental illnesses may be caused by environmental factors such as stress. The more severe mental disorders are generally considered to have biological or genetic origins.

mental illness can be caused by many different things but the environment is not one of them. Mental illness can be caused by some tramatic events in your life, or it can be inherited or being under alot of stress can cause it. I know, because I have been suffering from it for all my life and have learned to deal with it through medications and therapy. The best therapy that i have found is keeping busy.

Some are caused by environment, others are caused by genetics and still others are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.
