caramelized onions and this is a great way to use them. It's a little different in that the onions are chopped instead of sliced into rings.

Caramelized Onions: heat the olive oil in a large skillet and add the onion. Cook for 10 minutes or until tender. Add the vinegar and sugar. Cook for 3 mintues or until sugar is dissolved and the mixture is light brown. Remove from the heat.

A fried onion is deep-fried in oil, usually battered as well.

A carmelized onion is a simple onion fried in butter, possibly with something else - maybe a little sugar or brown sugar - and it has a 'gooey" coating when cooked.

Fried is just that...cooked in oil (like an onion ring)

Carmelized onions are those that are sauteed in a pan until they become soft and pliant and brown in color. You see those a lot on Philly Cheesesteaks.

fried onion is essentially an onion ring. it is battered and fried. a carmalized is not battered but rather placed on a grill or in a skillet and sauteed until the sugars in the onions are brought out and cooked a little, causing them to turn brown.
