that is to say- those politicians who we put into power (and supposedly represent us) won't be THAT necessary anymore?
Of course, we will still need SOME of them.
For example, just think if lobbyists couldn't simply pay-off that one swing vote to pass a law- they would have to convince MILLIONS of voters.
Or, if the majority of voters want to let gay couples get married and have the same rights (and problems pertaining to divorce) as heterosexual couples- we could directly vote for it.
Or, if we were to vote on the war in Iraq and if we should pull-out, send more troops, etc.

I agree with you, but it won't happen. Too many people reaping the system. We could start by lobbying for an end to the electoral college so we could vote for or representatives directly.

You are asking about "direct democracy." We have a little of it now, when citizens can vote on ballot measures and initiatives, which if passed make laws. These are at the local and state level, but not everywhere. Yes, we need much more direct democracy, because we no longer can have any trust and confidence in our elected representatives. Read the great new book Delusional Democracy - Fixing the Republic Without Overthrowing the Government to learn about direct democracy options.

Hopefully never. The chaos would destroy our economy as the global market deplores uncertainty, bigotry and racism would be rampant, voter fraud would be even worse than it is now.

Just look at states that allow ballot propositions. Most humans can't understand the legalese on those. Think about trying to understand truly complex issues.

As long as we vote on our federal and state issues by proxy (though our elected officials) I'd say when hell freezes over.

Direct democracy is a joke, a failure waiting to happen, and an utter pipe dream.
