Hey,
I am planning to get anew camcorder. Since I am an IT person(I am programmer) . I like to edit my videos add music , mix videos and create interesting movies. Now I use 5 years old Digital 8 camcorder. Now, its time to buy a new toy. Can't deside what to get. Plus i do not like quality....
It takes too long to transfer video from camcorder to computer for dv. Hardrive camcorders looks better in this case. What about picture quality? Will i loose quality if i will buy hardrive camcorders instead of mini dv?
Any particular Models in mind?

I recently bought the DCR-SR100, and I'm very happy with the video quality. While it's true that it records in mpeg2 (same format as DVD) and the quality suffers when compared to mini-dv. But will you be making DVD's of you videos? If so, you would be converting (compressing) the mini-DV video to mpeg2 format anyway.

As for editing mpeg2 videos, there are fewer choices vs. mini-dv. Here are a couple of mpeg2 editors that I know of that won't re-encode mpeg2 video other than the transitions (to minimize further compression and loss of video quality).

Free trial versions are available for downloading at their respective websites.

Personally, I enjoy the convenience of copying the video files over to my computer. I am now able to burn my videos to DVD much faster than when I used my mini-dv camcorder.
Here's a review of the DCR-SR100

and the recently release HCR-SR1 (records in High Def Video)

I had a mini dv and i just hate buying tapes also when you want to playback you just cant never seem to find that scene your looking for but now I got a jvc hd camcorder and its way better just hook up the usb and in less than five min you can upload your videos to your cpu also I dont see a difference in quality between the two. Get the new jvc's I think their cheaper now and you can take 3mp pics with them too and the hardrives come in 20 and 30 gb ranging which model you get.

You don't lose quality by *buying* a particular type of camcorder. You lose it by editing the video.

Hard drive and DVD camcorders encode in MPEG2, which is lossy compression. Each time you open/save, you lose more quality.

Best quality, if you plan to edit, is MiniDV, which is less compressed.

frustrating drives record hours and hours yet then you definately could desire to off load them to a DVD set authentic burner or purchase a cradle and burn them 2 hours at a time directly to DVD disks. the two DVD and frustrating tension are in basic terms approximately impossible to edit devoid of identifying to purchase particular utility.
