He also has a habit of rubbing against my legs constantly. This gets very irritating, how do I discourage this behavior?

He just wants either a) some attention or b) food, that's all. Pick him up and cuddle him a little, or feed him. Or pick him up on your way to feeding him, so you don't trip over him. ;-) My cat does that all the time when he's feeling a bit lonely and wants some affection.

Rubbing against your legs is his way of showing affection and love - hardly the sort of thing one wants to discourage, really. Again, picking him up and petting him when he does that will fulfill the need and the emotion that he's expressing and let you guys bond in a really nice way. Enjoy - it's LUV!! *smiles*

And ps to ps above: coming to you for loving is exactly what he's trying to do when he risks tripping you - he just wants you to stop walking and pay attention to him. He's, in effect, trying to rub against your legs and failing because you're moving. If he wants to "insult" you, or rather display displeasure with you or try to be bossy (insult isn't a feline concept, really), you'll know: he'll pee on the couch or in your bed, hiss at you or shred your clothes. *smiles*

If you're being serious, you should stop him by 'walking through him.' He's shown you, successfully, he's in control. If he's going to walk in front of you, continue on your path without regard to him whatsoever.

ps, A cat will 'show affection' by coming to you for loving, not trying to trip you. Rubbing legs while you're standing, fine. Walking in front of you, an insult to you.

This is how cats show their affection. Any attempts at scolding him for doing this will be an insult.
