Ever see those boxes with cables that go across the road? The ones you drive over, but they're only there for a little while? What are they for?

They are counting vehicle traffic. Usually done by the transportation department to keep track of traffic volume. That information is used in construction, safety, and road funding decisions. They generally count axles to differ cars from trucks.

I'm not sure what yours is, but some are to count cars, in otherwords, measure the amount of traffic that lane has pass over it, they use the info. to decide light timings and other traffic issues.
