I took a hit, and it caused a problem with someone else at the table.

If you have 12 and the dealer is showing 2, Basic Strategy says to hit. You did the right thing. Either the other person doesn't know what they are doing, or they were counting cards and you threw them off. Either way, don't worry about what other people at the table think, just play your game.

This is interesting because not did you make the right play (it would also be right to hit your 12 against a dealer 3), but the person complaining is wrong twice! Once for the incorrect strategy argument, but also wrong for being upset about your play. Contrary to popular belief at a BJ table, your odds of winning a hand are NOT affected by what any other player at the table does with their hand. Yes, the outcome of the hand is affected, but your odds are not. If you win because of it, then it is just luck. If you lose, then just bad luck. But your odds are not affected by that play. This is why is makes no sense to get upset at someone else's play at the table. (However, I must admit that it is awfully tempting to get upset when a bad play affects your outcome negatively :))

I would hit because you are usually not going to bust if you hit with 12... if the dealer is showing a deuce you really don't have to worry about what you have though since there is a good chance they will bust...

the mathematically correct play is to hit 12 against a dealer 2. and yes, some people will complain about it, but just ignore them or ask them what book their strategy comes from (hint: most loudmouth BJ players have never even read a book).

You would normally stand on that.
