I actually mean when the area is "radar enforced" as in no cop involved, just some box that takes pictures if you're going over...I understand how it works if you're dealing with people, but what about the machine?

The simple answer is that you can honestly get a ticket for going over the speed limit (even a mile) period. With that said, most police officers will not give tickets so long as you are not going more than 5 miles over the speed limit. Most cameras and vans that send out automatic tickets to speeders also are programmed to skip the first 5 miles over. And, just an interesting fact, even though car manufacturers have the responsiblity to make sure your odometer reads 100% correctly, there is usually a 2 to 3 mph variance from what your odometer reads and the actual speed you are going. This is especially true if you change the size of the wheels on your vehicle.

Legally, if you're going 1 mph over the limit, you can be ticketed.

Most jurisdictions give a 5 mph "cushion" as it were, that within 5 miles of the limit, you won't be ticketed. Some offer more, some offer less. Some don't worry about roads with artificially low speed limits. Some officers camp day and night on roads with artifically low limits. Get to know your area and where the cops camp.

I think a rule of thumb is more than 10 miles over the limit, if the limit is 60 they usually toleraste you up to 70 but after that... but again, legally at 61 miles per hour you are in infraction and can get a ticket. My experience for travelling through many states is I stay at about 68-69 when the limit is 60 and I never got a ticket.

dont pay the ticket
speed cameras

They are actually unconstitutional.
You can get out of paying the ticket by simply sending in a copy of your drivers license with the ticket. It will be dropped automatically. That is why the fine is so low and there are no points assessed. Cause they want people to think it is easier to just pay the damn thing.
See you have the right to face your accuser.... In this case your accuser is a camera. You can not subpoena a camera... So they automatically lose the case.=p

The bottom line is -the speed limit is the speed limit..An officer is in his rights to ticket you anything over the posted speed. When speed limits are posted on a road they are measured for safety for different things as road contour and weather conditions curves etc... they aren't just numbers pulled from the air...SAFETY is the factors.

Any speed over the speed limit could get you a ticket. Most cops won't give you a ticket unless it is five over but you never know.

Technically it can be anything over, but at the discretion of the officer. School and construction zones are usually strictly enforced. Highways, usually 10 mph over is allowed.

The police don't usually bother stopping folks who are going under ten miles-an-hour over the limit, but the bottom line is that they CAN give out a ticket if you are even one mile-an-hour over. Don't give them any additional cause and it probably won't happen. Good Luck!

Most policemen (that's being nice) will not pull you over if you stay about 5 miles or less within the speed limit....however, if you are in New Jersey they will stop you for chewing gum in your car......the police in New Jersey are mostly heartless thugs and will pull you over if your license plate says New York for no reason at all........but in general back to the question......most police will ignore anyone within 5 miles.......
