You will need to acquire a certain many hours of schooling depending on what state you are in. This will take you around 10 month to a year going full time. Then you must pass the written and practical exam. After certification you will need to renew your license every couple years.

I am a hair stylist in Utah, and in Utah you have to be in school for 2000 hours and then you have to take three state tests one is a practical which tests your skills and one is a written which test you on all of the book stuff and then you have to take a rules and regulations test which tests you on all of the laws in the state that you do hair in!! It is kind of hard but worth it. Utah has the most rquired hour in the country so a lot of people from out of state come to school here cause it is the BEST!!!

You need to complete a certain amount of hours depending on the state you are in. Then, you need to pass a State Board Exam which is a test administered by the state to see if you can follow all rules and safety guidelines. Check with your local beauty schools to see the amount of hours you need in your location. Good luck! It will be hard but it will be worth it!

P.S. I am currently a cosmetology student in CA!

Probably certain classes will get you there. If you really want to know your stuff in deep though, chemistry helps also. Of course, judging from a chemist friend who used to work in a cosmetic company, you will hate it after you realize what companies use as materials.

From a cosmetology school, it took me about 9 months to graduate. Then there is a licensing exam and you have to renew your license every so many years.
