I recently bought a new lap top and I came with Microsoft Works 8.5. This gives me Microsoft Works Word Processer, but it does not seem to be compatable with my university work which is all done in Word. Do I need Word, where can I get it and should I have to pay for it?

MS Word is a program you'd have to buy. There is a free reader for it, but that would not allow you to create Word documents, only read them. I am not 100% certain, but you may be able to save Works files as .doc (Word) files. Check if you have an option under "Save as" for choosing a different filetype. I do know you can save Wordpad files as .doc files. Alternatively, you could use Open Office. ...I suppose you could download illegally via a p2p filesharing system, but I wouldn't recommend that. Besides, you'd likely just get a virus from that. I would ask your school bookstore about student pricing. Many schools have really good deals on common software packages, some schools even give out copies.
Works Suite 99 is just an older copy of the Microsoft Works package you said came with your laptop.

As a student you can get the Student version of Microsoft Office, or download OpenOffice 2 from the link below. Open office can handle most MS office files and you can create PDFs.
I reckon in a couple of years time there will be a switch form Microsoft products to Open Source products and then to an open source operating system. Anyone wanting to try UBUNTU Linux see the link below. Download the ISO file and burn onto a CD. An example of UBUNTU can be run from the CD or you can install onto a hard disk (do NOT install it onto your windows hard disc)

You iether pay 199 quid, or you get a copy, but you must have the product key. Now, you say you had it on your old computer, but your lap top does not have it, and you tell them the product key, and they let you have it free. Works Word processer is ****. Get Word. But get it free. If you are at a college, there must be some wiz kid there who has a way around it...........do some enquiring. also, have you looked at all the criteria on your lap top, because there maybe a product key at the back, and you just have not installed it.

you probubly need word which is available at the same store where you bought the labtop, or you can buy it online. Its pretty hard to find a pirated version of word most copies on the street break down after a while so be carefull make sure the person you are getting it from knows what they are talking about. if they cant explain excaly how they do it and make you understand then they are just B.S.

should be able to save works file in a format that word will open. You should really buy word(to be strictly legal) however office is freely available on net with cracks.Never found a copy that has stopped as one person here claims. www.isohunt.com torrent downloader such as azureus would be needed

Microsoft and free are not words that work together. Look at updating to Linux and you will get Openoffice which is truly free.
