If Jesus was physically here on earth now, would he approve of his followers joining and participating in the military? Please explain your answers with the bible, not your own understanding. Thank You for answering my question.

For people who think they are Christian, why the different answers? If you all say you follow the teachings of Christ, all of you should have answered NO!! This shows how much the churches are failing to teach the truth from the Bible.

At John 13:35, Jesus taught his followers that love would be an identifying mark of true Christianity. He even instructed them to love their enemies. How can a Christian love his enemies if he is part of a group that slaughters other humans, regardless of the reason? It is not not possible.

It is between the Christian and Jesus Christ. If Jesus would ask me to join the military, then I would. Jesus hasn't, but I am sure Jesus has asked some to.

That is why some join the military even. Maybe that soldier is the only one who would know where the enemy was hiding and not walk into a trap because he/she had the gift of prophecy. Maybe that soldier would be the one that would end the war because they found all the terrorist & imprissoned them. All things work for the good for those that trust in the Lord.

Have you actually read the New Testament? Jesus was far from tolerant. Forget political correctness, Jesus was radical! He said "I am the way - and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." Does that sound tolerant to you? What we Christians do have to learn though, is to respect other people and the choices they make. Jesus never forced himself on anybody. He let people walk away from him, gave them a choice. He didn't force anybody to live a holy life or to repent. That is where most Christians get it wrong. It's not about tolerance, it's about respecting the free will God has given each and every one of us. I have to say that I have not a lot of respect for other beliefs. I do believe that Jesus is the truth and the only truth. I do however respect other people and their freedom to choose for themselves who or what they want to believe in.

I don't usually like to play "Bible Quarterbacking" games, but there is that passage where Jesus says "Give unto Cesaer that which is Ceaser's." One could use that as an argument that one can and should give to one's gov't that which they feel they owe to it, be it taxes or military service.

But what's the point in answering if I can't use my own understanding? I was taught to THINK about my faith and religion, not follow it blindly.

Jesus said, "Submit to those that are in authority over you." But, Christians don't kill... they are not Christians if they do. If I was a soldier I would follow orders.

I don't think so. The Bible says "thou shalt not kill" and Jesus taught us to love our neighbors, and even our enemies so I think He would rather us seek peaceful resolutions to our problems, rather than go to war.
