Ok, I'm going to dye from a box, that wasn't the real question. The real question is "I have box brown hair currently and want to dye it back to my normal hair color. The normal color is a few shades lighter. I know it's easier to go darker, but is this going to tuurn out?"

It's all from a box, or bottle, or whatever.

Using a pharmacy/walmart/supermarket dye to lift then redeposit color will have unpredictable and uneven results. This is due to the quality of the dyes and what parts of your hair "take" and "release" the dye.

You need to have the color professionally lifted for the best results. Many dyes contain metallic pigments that, if you use the wrong lifter, it can damage your hair. Dye deposits pigment. Dye lifters are bleaches formulated to lift the dye without bleaching the hair. You should get a mostly natural result, give or take, depending on the type of dye you used.

All supermarket products are formulated to lift then deposit. Formulas are a bit more high tech than they were 10 years ago, they aren't just dye, dye, dye or lift, lift, lift anymore. So, yes, you can lift the color with supermarket dyes, but the quality of dye which you used before, and are using currently, and the type of dye you used before, and are using currently, will have dramatic effects on the quality of the new color.

You're right that it's a lot easier to go darker, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to go lighter on your own. I highly recommend doing a strand test before coloring all of your hair. Just do a small section and see how it turns out. I have had both good and bad experiences with dying my hair lighter at home. Also, I think a lot of it depends on the brand of haircolor you use. My favorite (and the only one I will use) is Loreal Feria.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN UNLESS YOU USE BLEACH. Colour can not lift colour. You need to remove colour before going lighter. The only thing that removes colour is bleach. Do all the stylists out there a favor and DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I can promise you that if you attempt this, you will end up with a big mess and then you will need to pay big bucks for a stylist to fix the problems you created. It's best to go and have a stylist do it. And if you are low on cash, go to your local beauty school and have the students do it for you. They are trained really well and it usually cost like $10!!!!

If you're ok with it not being perfect, then go for it. But I never go lighter from a box. People have different hair though, your hair may take. Good luck! You can always wear a hat... lol

Colour will not lift a colour. You should have done in a hair salon. You cant go lighter without bleach. If you have roots, a lighter colour will be light only on the roots and rest of it will be still brown.

it really is easier to go to a salon and get it done darker is ok from a box but lighter it will possibly go redish or orangy then your in a bigger mess box colours arent as good as the professional ones also the salon can mix and match to what you want.

Listen to Tina. She is correct. Coloring your hair is a science as there are different things going on with the roots/ regrowth, mid shaft and ends. Your regrowth will go lighter, your ends will stay dark and or go darker. Danger, Danger.........

this is best done by a salon.
or you may get a nasty greenish surprise on your head.
better, safer to streak and let grow out.or cut if streaks turn off-color you can cover that back up more easily.
the best experts for this area are still at Clairol.
good luck!

i would say test it first, if you're set on dying it from the box. but definitely don't do that whole head of hair without knowning what result you will end up getting!
