I know that there are some schools that are trying to get rid of recess completely. I think that is so ridiculous. KIDS NEED TO BE KIDS. They are going to have a lot of behavior problems if kids don't have time to be free & play, which will probably result in more kids on medication for the wrong reasons! Some kids work hard for recess and look forward to it. I think if the removal of recess comes to past, that it will definitely backfire in their face. That is when I will homeschool my kids (once I have kids)!

No, that doesn't sound fair. A proper learning environment includes break time. I seem to remember at least 10 minute recesses when I was in school, and breaks in junior high and high school were 15 minutes.
I would check with the school and make sure what your son has said is accurate before I got upset, though.

I think prison inmates get more time than that. Children should be able to be children. Play time is important to a childs development as it helps them to develop social skills. Now their may be reasons why they are having short periods like war or disease or lack of teachers to watch over the playtime and of course it also depends on their age. Amercians have always tried to stress social behavior responsibilities over education. That is changing though as we see more year round schools, and things like less time outside and more time in the classroom. I dont personnally like the idea of having little time for my child to be a child but thats just me, things are changing for kids these days and life is getting tougher faster for them. Do what you can to help them get what they need.

Why bother to go outside for that length of time, by time they get their coats on and exit the door, they will have to come back in. Double check with the school to make sure he has the time amount right. Doesn't sound possible.

That is wrong. Children need relaxing time and fresh air so giving them only 5 minutes should not happen.

I think if you're going to be a parent, you should use spell check.
