Whatever you do that elevates your heart rate to at least 50-60% of your max heart rate and avoiding to go 80% (where your muscles start working on the anaerobic range). It is not really about what you do, it is about what how your heart is working.

We reached the concept of cardio through the gyms and it is normal to think of them but the truth is that the gyms aren't necessary. They have very nice and good (and expensive) equipment though.

Walking could be a very good cardio exercise, of course jogging and running are too, you just need a good pair of tennis shoes to avoid injuries. When riding a bicycle you are doing cardio too.

To be sure you are within the working heart rate you can visit the page: http://www.fitzones.com/members/Fitness/heartrate_zones.asp
and it will calculate the light, easy and aerobic ranges of cardio work out for you.

To know your heart rate you can buy a heart rate monitor. Polar is a very good brand and they are as cheap as 50 usd. If you do not want to spend even that, calculate your heart rate at the traditional way: with two fingers on your neck measure how many beats your heart gives in 20 sec and then multiply by three

I started doing jumping-jacks in the mornings. When I started, I could barely do 100, but every week I added 50-100 more and now I'm up to 2000. It takes about 30 minutes and I'm sore for 3 days afterward, but I sure am getting fit. The world record is 33,000 but at my current rate of adding 50-100 a week, that's going to take a while to get up to.
Oh, if you are going to try it, you need to play some good music, because it gets boring after about 500.
