First of all yes.. it burns like the fires of HELL!! I got one on my lower back it took 3 hours and was the worst pain of my life! And everyone who says it numbs sucks cause mine sure didn't! I went into shock after the outline was finished and I started shaking uncontrollably but then I ate a doughnut and I was ok to proceed with the colour. During it feels like a hot needle being rubbed back and forth really fast over raw flesh. After it feels like a mix of a sunburn and a bruise for about a week. I have also enjoyed my tattoo now for 4 years though. The pain fades but the tattoo, if done well, does not. I still after all of that say that it was a totally worthwhile experience. Call me crazy. And for all of those people that say what about when you're old? Tattoos are so common now that everyone will be in the same boat... besides your old and saggy when your like 80.. so you probably have a good 60-50 years before it looks silly.. and how many old ppl do you see wearing clothes that expose alot of flesh any ways!? My only advice is put it somewhere it can be covered if you want to. But other than that... INK IT UP BABY! Tattooed people are just like everyone else...except they're cooler and the can kick your a**!

Though most artists will tell you that the pain of a tattoo is no greater than that of a sunburn or a bee sting, I’m highly sympathetic to the whiners: sunburns and bee stings hurt!!

After fainting during a lower back tattoo, I was curious- what is the most painful place to be inked?

The most painful places on the body to get a tattoo according to reader polls:

18% Genitalia
13% Ankles
10% Lower Back
9% Feet
7% Lower Legs
5% Chest
5% Ribs (Sides)
5% Upper Legs
5% Hands
5% Face
4% Forearms
3% Upper Arms
3% Wrists
3% Upper Back
3% Rear End
2% Stomach

One artist says that the most painful parts of the body are the neck, thighs, and backs of the arms.

Another source reiterates the sunburn and bee sting motif, but allows that the elbows, knees and armpits are fairly touchy…

A third classifies the pain gradient by gender, saying that the most painful spots for men are the abdomen, spine and chest, while for a woman it’s the ankle, spine and ribcage.

With all these varying opinions, what to believe?

When it comes down to it, all artists agree that being well rested, having a light meal prior to your appointment, taking some Tylenol and knowing how to relax make the only real difference.

The experience of being tattooed will not last long compared to the tattoo itself. Take care of yourself, and you’ll make it. I did, and I still cry at bee stings…

I have a tattoo on my lower back. I put my myspace link in the source section, and if you look in my pictures you will see it (if you care). If you want to get one, I say go for it! The back is a great place, but be sure to think about getting one on the upper back, do you want everyone to be able to see it if you wear backless dresses? If you don't I would consider going for the lower back. It hurts! But, it isn't unbearable. I do NOT take pain well, but I got one, and I didn't even cry! It's a constant pain, but not a screeching one. Good luck!

By the way- It will be tender afterwards, but I don't think that it feels anything like a sunburn. It doesn't really hurt afterwards unless you put a lot of pressure on it. I got mine in the middle of my Senior year of high school, and I had to tote a bookbag 2 days after. It didn't bother me a bit.

OK i have 3 tattoos! I'm getting some next month starting next week! I love them! it hurts but i think for myself that i sat very well through all 3 times! IT also depends on how you take pain! It also depends on where the tattoo will be! Don't get something done because it looks nice and you think everyone is doing it! Get it because you want it for yourself! Try not to get the same tattoo your sister has either that's just copy work, non original, and completely pointless!

Hell yes it hurts. But its a good kind of pain. It is also part of the experience that makes the tattoo worth while. Don't get one just to get one, make sure it has purpose and meaning. No matter where you are in the future, you will remember this tattoo, what you were doing in life, what you were going through that exact moment and the emotions you were experiencing. The pain is part of the experience.

Well i say it hurts but im pretty sure you can get through it. My Mom got one with 3 hearts and vines with my and my two brothers names on it and she said it hurt reall bad but she got through it. But think of this first. If you decide to get and and it starts to hurt really bad, Keep getting it because you`ll have that for the rest of your live and you dont want just a few ugly lines on your back forever from a tatoo you never got fully done.

I feel ready to pass out even thinking about getting a tattoo... and I have 2 and really want another. I have low tolerance for pain and HIGH anxiety, but it's worth it. I have one on my lower back that didn't hurt at all, and one on my shoulder blade which hurt but even a wimp like me got through it.

i will give u the honest to god answer. and i have a tattoo on my upper back too. it was my first. i was SO SO SO scared to get it. i put it off for weeks then i finally went one day. i was getting cold chills, shaking, turning blue from feeling so scared. lol. i mean i was really really frightened. like who wants to get hurt right?! but i went ahead with it. the guy i had was really nice. he said i will do just one dot on this tattoo outline and u tell me if u want me to stop. i said okay. he did it and i didn't really feel much of anything. boy did i feel stupid. lol. he finished it and i was amazed at how little it hurt. it literally feels like someone scratching u on the back with the tipp of a nail. not pressing to hard just a lil. it was more uncomfortable than hurting. it starts to get annoying after a while. so the honest answer is no....it doesn 't really hurt at all. unless it's on the bone then the scratching my hurt a lil worse. but not so much it would make u cry. mine didn't hurt at all afterwards and healed so quickly. and i love it now. i am getting another one on my thigh. go for it!
even the guy at the tattoo place told me women naturally have a higher pain tolerance then men cuz of childbirth! good luck!
