The term "born again christian" is christian-speak for someone who has come to know God in a personal way, a way that has changed their life.
The phrase born again comes from a part of the bible where Jesus is talking to Nicodemus, indicating that in order to know me you must come to me like a little child - you must be born again. If you want, you can find the story in John chapter 3, verse 3.
Nicodemus was a religious leader and he was astounded by what Jesus was doing - but it was apparent that he did not know Christ or recognize who he was. Nicodemus thought with the miraculous powers Jesus was demonstrating that he must be from God... but how could that be because Christ did not follow most of the religious conventions of the day.
Jesus' response was that if you want to know the Kingdom of God you must be born again... or in some translations born from above.
Ideally, Christians who say that they have been born again have experienced this renewal of spirit and seek to follow after God and know him in a new way... much in the same way a child has a wide-eyed wonder of the world and everything is new to them.

To keep such a long answer short, i guess you could describe it as this...Everyone knows of Christ and that He died. But many do not realize that He died for YOU personally. This is the Gift of salvation He offers. If you chose to accept it, this is your confirming that your old life is now dead, and you are "born again" with Christ. Building up a relationship, focusing and learning on Christ would be the nest steps in this life-long process, which God makes possible through His Holy Spirit. Should you chose to deny His death for you, you would be damned to haydes where you can see all those in Heaven, where you remember the moments you denied Christ, and where your continuosly tormented for all eternity. ME, i chose to live in the abundance of the Living God within me. I can testify to His truth, and have no regrets whatsoever. Should you or anyone else have any further questions, feel free to e-mail me! May the Mord Bless You Abundantly!!!

Jesus said, "unless a man be born again, he will not enter the kingdom of heaven". Born again in this context means, born of the spirit of God. When a person realizes they have sinned, and asks forgiveness of God for those sins, and accepts the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (He died to pay for our sins), then that is called being born again. It means the old man is gone, the new man is come, with the spirit of God now indwelling the one who has become washed clean by the blood of Christ.

gosh... im a Methodist.... here
Born again is a soteriological term used primarily in the Evangelical, Fundamentalist, and Pentecostal branches of Protestant Christianity, where it is associated with salvation, conversion and spiritual birth. Outside of these circles, the term is often applied by extension to other phenomena, including a transcending personal experience – or the experience of being spiritually reborn (as opposed to spiritual birth).
To be born again in Christianity is synonymous with spiritual birth and, in some denominational traditions, salvation. The term is used somewhat differently in various Christian traditions.
The Christian use of the term is derived from the third chapter of the Gospel of John, where Nicodemus visits Jesus:
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God."
Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again."
Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit."
-John 3:1-5 (New Revised Standard Version)
(Note that some translators consider "born from above" to be a better translation than "born again".)
Most Christian denominations hold that a person must be born again in some sense in order to be a Christian, and thus that all who are true Christians are in fact born again, whether they describe themselves as such or not. The Roman Catholic Church, for example, considers that "Baptism is ... the sacrament by which we are born again of water and the Holy Ghost." [1], though the term is not frequently used by Catholics. This is also the belief held by Eastern Christianity, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism, among other Christian traditions. However, the term itself is most frequently used by Fundamentalist, Pentecostal, and Evangelical Protestants, where it is often associated with an intense conversion experience and an encounter of the individual with the power of God. Many Christians who are "born again" in this sense deny that those without such an experience are true Christians.
The idea of being born again carries with it the theological idea that a Christian is a new creation, given a fresh start by the action of God, freed from a sinful past life and able to begin a new life in relationship with Christ via the Holy Spirit. John Wesley and Christians associated with early Methodism referred to the born again experience as "the New Birth". The Unity Church suggests that being born again is a continuous process that must be done repeatedly as one "dies" to old, ineffective ideas and redirects oneself toward Christ consciousness.
In recent history, born again is a term that has been associated with evangelical renewal since the late 1960s, first in the United States and then later around the world. Associated perhaps initially with Jesus People and the Christian counterculture, born again came to refer to an intense conversion experience, and was increasingly used as a term to identify devout believers. By the mid 1970s, born again Christians were increasingly referred to in the mainstream media as part of the Born Again Movement

3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.[a]"
4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
9"How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.
10"You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.[d] 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.[e]

Someone who has been born of the Spirit of God- who has put their faith in Jesus Christ, believing what he did on the cross - by dying for our sins, and then rising again on the 3rd day. Someone who has confessed their sin to Jesus Christ- repented and has put their trust in HIM.
They are forgiven, past, present and future- Born again in the spirit of God! They have eternal life in HIM.
1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
1 John 3:3 "Unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God"

several different "denominations" have slightly different definitions for that phrase.... For all who come to God in The Way He proscribes and receive His free Gift of Salvation. they are "born Again"... it is an experience that can not be adiquatly explained to one who has not gone through it... For those of The True Christian Faith that is It though... But one must come to god in His Way...not in man's way... only God can confirm one is "Born Again"... If one is not "Born Agian" one is not of The True Christian Faith... it matters not what "denomination" one participates in... God is not concerned with that... it is all in the comeing to Him as He proscribes... and that has nothing to do with any man made doctrin or dogma...
