everyone reacts to anti-depressants differently...when i was on prozac, it made me horribly sick to my stomach and some others swear by the stuff...i got put on paxil which was a nightmare and i have been on wellbutrin for years now and havent had one problem...
it all depends on the person and their body because everyone is different...
i am sorry that you lost the baby...it must be horribly hard to have gone through that...i had a friend who was 1 day away from her due date and realized the baby wasnt moving at all...the baby had actually died...she was a mess...it takes time to recover from such a horrible thing...she will need the support of you and her family...but dont hound her because that can just make her angry...you two should talk about it and share your feelings...
however, after going off of anti-depressants, some people feel fine and never go back on them..others become kind of dependant on them, like me...

Prozac is an excellent antidepressant. If your wife would only try it for a few weeks( it takes that long to have its full effect) I'm sure she would feel much better. Her depression will not worsen if she stays on the medication as long as her doctor prescribes.

First her reaction could be due to hormone changes as well as the loss of the pregnancy, a form of post partum.
Prozac is a good medication when monitored by a physician. The first several days she may be tired/sleepy but within ten days her body would have adjusted.
Trust her doctor to know what is best and safest for her.
Oh, and the two of you talk about your feelings and the loss of the baby. There are stages in grief and both of you will go through them at different times and lengths, but communication is very important.
Sorry for your loss

there is clinical depression and environmental depression. clinical depression is usually a chemical imbalance that needs constant medication to regulate the seritonin levels in the brain. environmental (situational) depression is the result of an experience (a death, illness, injury, some form of emotional trauma) that causes a temporary decrease in the balancing chemicals in the brain, causing depression. prozac is a great medicine to help get those chemical back to normal IF TAKEN AS DIRECTED. the key is to take as directed. not taking the medication or stopping the medication as soon as patient starts to feel better will result in a roller coaster of feelings and emotions. encourage her to take the meds as prescribed and follow up with doctor as appropriate. it takes between 6-12 weeks for the medication to work its magic. good luck.

I am taking prozac now. I also took it a long time ago after I miscarried. It is a good antidepressant but nothing but time can help you feel better after a loss. It will make things a little easier. I am so very sorry for you lose.

Medicine can be a good way to numb some of the pain of losing a child but the best thing to do is stay close to people and don't isolate for the both of you. As far as your wife trying to invalidate a dr's opinion, I doubt that she is in a good state of mind to make medical decisions for herself right now. You should take that up with her and your doctor. Sorry for your loss. God Bless

I think the wisest course of action is to have her tell her doctor that she fears taking the medication and have the doctor reassure her or modify his prescription to fit her needs. You should really trust your doctor for that.
In the meantime, read about prozac at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prozac
If you want, read this too: http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic532.htm#section~treatment

Prozac, also known as Fluoxetine hydrochloride, can be dangerous. fluoxetine can react with many types of medications. I would recommend Zoloft (setraline hydrochloride) instead. it is not as reactive.
