It is difficult for people untrained in veteranary medicine to find out the age of a cat. A veteranarian can tell by looking at a cat's teeth. I adopted a cat from a man who said his cat was 13 years old, but the cat looked and acted much younger. We took him to the vet to find out, and we were right.
