Its true and sad. My ex-wife has conditioned our daughter to think Jesus Christ is a swear word. I tried talking to my daughter but she gets really upset that dad keeps swearing and tells mom who I think likes the conflict this creates between me and our daughter.
What can I do??

Teach her about context. That's the difference between using the phrase as a curse and as the name for an (allegedly) historical religious figure.

How are you using those words? Anything is a swear word if that is how it is used. If you say, "Jesus Christ" in a setting where you mean nothing about the Christian god-man, but out of frustration or verbal expression, then you swore. If you say the word, "Dishwasher" in the same setting, you swore. Silly, I know, but it's all about context.
But if you used the words, "Jesus Christ" in prayer or religious conversation and your daughter gets upset over it, it's time to explain to her that it's somebody's name. Ask her how she would feel if somebody thought that her name was a swear word?
I understand your predicament about the ex trying to make trouble. It's time to talk to your daughter and explain how different houses have different things. You and her mom feel differently about different things. You use some words a little more loosely than her mom is comfortable with. Nothing is wrong with it, it's just done differently. You can help her think of things that are done in one way at her mom's house and how it's done differently at your house.
This may ease her feelings about the words, "Jesus Christ" and some other issues that she hasn't verbalized yet.
Good luck.

If you can't expain Jesus Christ is not a swear word but is in fact taking your Gods name in vain to an 8 year old then you have problems that can't be answered on this place. Of course you could stop saying JC except where appropriate and that would end the problem.

Dear JJ,
It is very sad but I know that our heavenly Father's arm has not grown short. As sad as this is He is able to bring your daughter around.
Are you able to take her to church / Sunday school? Do so whenever possible. Meanwhile ask that this situation be put on your church's prayer list.
When you pray with your daughter for the time being could you simply refer to Jesus as LORD and Savior?
Could you talk to her about her best friend and ask what name or names the friend is called by. Ask her in your own way of speaking how she would feel if someone started calling her Bad Friend or Stupid Friend or Crazy Friend ...
At the appropriate time you could tell your daughter that you feel bad when she talks about your Best Friend.
Whatever you do, don't give up because Jesus does love your daughter.

Culturally it *is* a swear word. She'd get in trouble for using it in school.
I'm sorry your wife is using it as a wedge between you and your daughter.
Could you explain that it is a person's NAME. And then say your daughters name. That isn't a swear word is it? Using a persons NAME isn't a swear word to me, even though other people think it might be.

Well I think it is a "swear word" depending on how you use it. If you are just talking about him being a person such as 'Jesus Christ is amazing' than no it isn't a "swear word" and I would just explain to you rdaughter that he is person and explain how great he is and tell her the right way to use his name and the wrong. If you are using it like when you're mad or something like that in the same way you would sy 'Ow man!' than that is a "swear word"

Commend her for such insight at a young age.
Jesus Christ is indeed a curse word - hear people using it as such all the time - best when done as gorgeoustxwoman does. If you are gonna screw around with somone's name, may as well do it well.
To my knowledge, his real name is Yehoshua (Hebrew) or Yeshua (Aramaic) - best translation to English being Joshua. In this manner he should aways be spoken of respectfully if not reverently - but you can do without attaching the "blessed be he" in front of his name as Muslims like to do - to them he is nothing more than a blessed prophet.
Jesus is at best like calling me Joe and at worst like calling me Joesuck...but I am no linguistics expert.
So the argument can be made that when you say Jesus Christ you are talking about no one - though we all know what it is supposed to mean.

OH MY WORD!!!! i can't believe that society has sunk SO low that the holy name of Jesus Christ is a swear word!!! unbelievable...i'm disgusted...(with the ppl who have answered in that way)
anyway about your question...tell your ex-wife to stop teaching your daughter these kinds of things...have her refute this to your daughter. show your daughter passages in the Bible talking about the name of God and hopefully she will believe that. I hope this helps!

It is when it's used in the same manor as a swear word would be used in. Like when you drop something, and yell "Jesus Christ!: it's taking the name of our lord in vain.

It is a swear word while used in anger, from Encarta Dictionary:
"offensive term: an offensive term expressing frustration or dismay (slang)
Microsoft® Encarta® 2006."
She should not have been exposed to slang and bad words in such little age.
