I stopped with my other two, because i was sick...thats why most people stop cold turkey, because they cannot handle the smell, not because one day they woke up and just stopped, I dont believe that at all. Its usually because you cannot handle doing it anymore.

I quit both with both my pregancies and unfortunately have gone back to it (outside only). The first time I was able to quit cold turkey, the second time I had to cut down gradually. From all the research I have read, it is only proven that smoking can cause low birth weight. Low birth weight can cause many defects. I was very fortunate to have two perfectly healthy, average-sized babies (both just under 8 pounds). I only know one other mom who smoked during pregnancy. She never quit. She has had 4 nine pound plus healthy babies. This is only anecdotal evidence and I know it is better to quit as soon as possible. Keep up the good work and stick with it. Babies have the highest weight gain during the 3rd trimester. I would definitely suggest having quit by then.

hey i am pregnant as well about 8 months. It is really tough to quit smoking. At the beginning i smoked a lot because i was 19 and i was freaking out what my parents would think of their daughter having a baby so young. Then morning sickness happened but only for a couple months and i couldnt stomach a cigarette it made me want to gag even more. Now that i am 8 months i can unfortunately stomach a cigarette and when i get stressed out i smoke. Everything is going okay in my pregnancy besides the fact that i have gestational diabetes but everything is healthy with my baby. Normal weight, length, and all organs appear fine. I am not sure if its true or not but i was told that quitting could actually harm the baby once you do it frequently because the baby is so used to it and he/she would have the same results of a smoker stopping cold turkey. And the more you get stressed out the more your baby stresses. I definitly would recommend to try gum or talk to your doctor about what to do which i know can be hard cause you dont want to look like the "bad mom" but your not. I know a lot of people that smoked during their pregnancy and all of them turned out healthy except one who sometimes had problems breathing and had to use an at home breathing treatment but shes about 4 now and never uses it anymore. Good luck on trying to quit.

You need to quit, cold turkey and ASAP. Just because one person may have smoked during pregnancy and had a normal pregnancy does not mean you can. You can quit! Every time you feel a craving, you have to think of the innocent life you're now completely responsible for. Tell everyone around you to help you and stop you from smoking. Don't use patches or gum, no nicotine, just stop, no matter what it takes.
Saying you'll stop in a couple of weeks isn't good enough, since when that time comes, you'll want to give yourself a couple of more weeks, and then a couple more. It's only natural to have a hard time.
Smoking definitely hurts the baby. Don't do it!

As long as you really try to cut it back. If you absolutely can't quit then I reccomend only allowing yourself to have 2 a day then 1 and then none.
I am 17 weeks and quit cold turkey as soon as I found out. I cheated at about 2 months in and after I felt so guilty I refuse to be around it now. I want the absolute best for my baby and I think when you really feel that it relies on you it'll be easier to kick the habbit.
Good luck and congrats. It's quit a journey being pregnant and so far I love every moment of it!

You should really quit now. Every time you inhale 156,000 chemicals enter your bloodstream and flow directly to your baby. Go cold turkey. I know a few people who smoked while pregnant and the outcomes were not good. They were underweight and have chronic breathing problems. Also, the babies cried non stop when they were born because they were going through withdrawals. You think withdrawals are hard for you? Imagine what they'd be like on a little baby. So quit now and YOU will endure the agony of quitting. Don't quit and instead the baby will have to deal with the agony of quitting. I quit last month when I found out I was pregnant. It's hard but everytime I think about how awful it would be for a baby to go through withdrawals it hardens me up against my struggle with smokes. I also had to quit smoking pot! double whammy. It sucks but u have to put the baby first. Your not #1 anymore, the baby is!

Quitting is tough! I salute you having the intelligence to stop for your baby, and your baby will thank you.
Now, the downside is, that you really need to quit as soon as possible, because regular cigarettes contain some REALLY bad stuff, including bleach and arsenic. I would recommend switching (again only until you quit) to Americal Spirit or another additive free cigarette, I believe Winston also has one. Personally I would want for you to quit cold turkey, but not everyone can do it, so try as hard as you can, and with luck, you may squeeze past doing severe permenant damage, even though most of the major neural and organ development is in the first trimester. Good luck.

You are on the right path dear. Gradually and the way you are going, you'll have quit by week 8. The biggest danger smoking is to pregnancy is the possibility (really high) of giving birth to a tiny baby. But if you quit successfully at week 8, and maintain a healthy diet throughout the 40 weeks, your little angel will develope into a gracefully big angel.

when I am pregnant I quit cold turkey, 4 times now, some reason I always start back up when the baby arrives, we only smoke outside. Anyways, cutting back is a good start, just make sure that you quit by 8 weeks, it can cause problems like low birth weight, and can make babies more susceptible to SIDS
The patch will not help as it still releases nicotine into the blood stream which will still affect your baby.

If you are lucky like I was, as soon as the morning sickness hits the smell of smoke will make you sick and make it easier to quit.
Not to condone smoking while pregnant, but the only thing they have proven that it causes is low birth weight. As long as you quit soon, you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Congrats on the baby and good luck on quitting! You can do it!
