Cheapest hotel in downtown is the State Street Hotel. It's no frills and has shared bathrooms, but it's clean and the service is great. But it is next to the train station, so you can hear the train running by quite loudly! Their number is (805) 966-6586. Otherwise, expect to pay at least $200/night in motels.

I stayed at the Ala Mar once, and the hotel manager tried to seduce my boyfriend. It was $200/night, tidy, but you'll have to defend your man.

You can do a winery tour yourself pretty easily. I liked Gainey Vineyards the best. Firestone was also great. However, as an avowed wine geek, I gotta say Santa Ynez Valley is highly overrated. There are wineries IN Santa Barbara. The best is a nano-crafter called Whitcraft. The place is an industrial office front, but the guy makes the BEST obscure wines. Otherwise, to get to Santa Ynez Valley, head up Hwy 154, go south on 101 then head west on 246 till you hit the 154 again.

Other fun things: roasting marshmallows over the UCSB eternal flame, Stearns Wharf, surfing lessons in Summerland, Paseo Nuevo.
