The pedal bin is what you put rubbish in,you press down the pedal at the bottom of the bin and the lid opens.

Lillian Moller Gilbreth. She lived 1878 to 1972. She was a prolific inventor and among other things, she invented the pedal bin. I'm afraid that I haven't been able to find the date of the invention, but I think that it was probably in the 1920s or 1930s.
