no because most people are in prison out of survival. i went to prison for 6 years. i was a single, disabled mother selling drugs to support my children. i didn't even do them. but i will tell you, what i did wasn't right. i should've learned a trade that i could do legally to support my children. i am now out of prison, working as a bookkeeper making good money. i am now a law abiding citizen. just trying to survive, a lot of people do end up in prison. take it from me, it's not worth it. there are other ways to get by. get an education and go to work doing something legal.

yea I bet the murders and rapists and so on take into consideration that they get food clothes and shelter, if your talking about homeless people don't know why they would want to go there. There is a reason it is called prison, Dang I am missing that lovely Orange prison jump suit, That's right I don't want one

Yea...someone will always want more...giving them food, clothes and shelter is not the answer. Showing them how to earn their own food, shelter and clothing will make them appreicate it more. I see people destroy homes that they are "given". They waste welfare money on non-necessities and then cry when don't have enough.

What percentage of people are in prison because they didn't have food, clothes or shelter so they stole it? We have prisons because people are given to greed, selfishness, pride and violence not because they are deprived of necessities.

yes but not near as many when people go to prison because they are denied the most basic needs in a self centered society that worries about materialistic clutter instead of a starving child you have to wonder if the society is worth having.

maybe in your little corner of the world, but in mine, we do this thing called 'going to work' to make money to provide ourselves and our family with food, clothes and shelter. and if we feel like going on a trip or buying something nice, we work a little longer and EARN a bit more to pay for such things. what you want is communism so pick a place on the globe that will honor your request, move there and drop us a line in a few years and tell us of your utopia.

Yes.
People do not always commit crimes to satisfy their needs (food, clothes, shelter). They also commit crimes to satisfy their wants. The provision of necessities would have no effect on rapists, for example, or people who beat up other people.
In addition, even if government provided people's needs, some people would probably still commit crimes for the thrill of it.

So all the rapists, murderers, drug pushers, drunk drivers, embezzlers, and child molesters are only looking for food clothes and shelter. Interestingly naive idea.

While I cannot say that these are a right for all, a right does not guarantee, not as long as greed, power, envy, and the like exist.

Throw in some adequate health care and we would see the prison population decline. There will always be the drug and drug-related crimes until we make changes in some of our laws and fund prevention.
