I’m not a pro but I guess consider a photo enthusiast. I have a Canon Rebel XT, I just purchased a Canon 70-200mm L f/2.8

I have a 7 month old daughter that is my main model.

I was under the impression that this is the best lens for portraits and sport shots, and f/2.8 makes it so fast that it really doesn’t need very much light. However, I’ve experience the 70-200mm f/2.8 that it needs more light than my Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6.

Settings on dial is usually “P” could that be it? Does it work better on different settings?

Thanks,

Marvin

Great lens.
Set the camera to aperture-priority and dial in an aperture setting of f/2.8.

Basic rule of physics, the telephoto lens is metering for a much smaller area than the wide angle zoom, therefore it has less light to work with. Set for a wide aperture and you should be fine.

Take the guess work out of it and use a tripod.
