It's hard to work with bleach- and that's what you are going to have to do to go from black to anything else. If you are feeling brave, you can go to a beauty supply hair store, and buy bleach, developer etc. and try it yourself. If you do that, you will need to strip your hair color down from black to a level maybe a little lighter than you want to go, then dye it brown again. Keep in mind that color has to go through phases, you can't get to blond until you go through all the reds, oranges, yellows...
That's why I say it may be hard to go to your 'natural' hair color from black if you use chemicals.
I would go to a professional stylist to do the initial change- that way you have someone who knows the chemicals they are dealing with, and how hair will react. They will also have higher quality products to work with, and it won't damage your hair as much. (it will still damage it though)
But, it won't work to put the color you want over black- it will just stain over it.

Simple rule: COLOUR CAN NOT LIFT COLOUR!!! You need to bleach your hair out first than apply a toner to get the look you want. TRUST ME, this is difficult. You will need a proffesional to do this. You need someone who understands hair colour and the colour wheel to fix this. Go to a salon or a local beauty school and get it done.

yeah you can, but you might have to leave it on longer than the directions say to. this might cause your hair to dry out more than usual. if you do, make sure you use a deep conditioner for the next 3 weeks. a good deep conditioner is as thick as mayonaise!

hmm, i agree that i think you'd have to bleach your hair first in order to dye it lighter than black.
