Cafeteria-style religion... yes, it is a concern. But I don't think you can generalize the topic in such broad strokes.
Catholics, for example, believe that the Bible is the revealed word of God, written down by humas in the best way the authors (or should I say, scribes) could understand it. But humans are limitted in understanding in so many ways - culture, location, time, science, education, experience... When biblical scholars and theologians work together to examine the texts of the bible, they are looking at the purpose of the texts. If something is a story instead of a historical account, why is this story so important that it has been preserved for over 2000 years? If something is a set of laws, why where they considered to be good for the people for which they were written? And what does this all mean for us today.
Yes, some people very carelessly pick and choose what is convienant for them to believe. Some people make it easy on themselves and don't bother to think seriously about the seeming contradictions in the texts in which they believe. And some people actually put in time, effort, scholarship, and prayer into living their faith.

The reason is that Satan is alive and real. He has done a great job of diluting and confusing the truth of God's word. Most Christians don't realy read the bible, they carry it around as a part of their dress code for church. The majority of Americans today (85% profess to be Christians), only know what someone else has told them the bible says. Another disturbing fact is that all across America sermons are being preached and the bible has not been opened or even referred to in the message being given.

True believers in Christ believe the Bible is the word of God, inerrant in doctrine, history and ethics. Some who call themselves Christians may do as you describe, the majority do not.
Let me guess, you are talking about Leviticus? We understand that the ceremonial and dietary laws as well as certain punishments for certain sins was meant for the Jewish community at that time and place and not applicable for the Christian community.

I do not like to use the word "religion." For that is mans attempt in their best efforts to get right with God. Many different demoninations, or practices, that people follow that makes them feel like they can get in "good standing" with our creator. Thats why there are so many conflicts between these "religions" and people are fighting over it. Thats the result of tainting God's plan. We forget the reason Jesus came and died for us! He came so that we would have the true way back to the Father, and that He would establish the TRUE way of living. Thus, Christianity, which means Christ-like or little-Christ, is NOT a religion but merely the lifestyle of Christ that we are to replicate. Not by our own efforts, but made possible by the Holy Spirit in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Accept His Gift of salvation and experience the life of abundance. Dont make it hard on yourself when you know the answer! May the Lord Bless You Abundantly!!!

We're all sinners. We can't possibly follow everything in the Bible. Of course, that doesn't validate anything. People *cough cough* Catholics have twisted God words. I however am trying to follow only what the BIBLE teaches, and not what I might think is right.

Jesus was an example for us on how to live, many who profess to be christians are not this passage is from mathew 7: 22 and 23 22 21 "Not all who sound religious are really godly people. They may refer to me as `Lord,' but still won't get to heaven. For the decisive question is whether they obey my Father in heaven. 22 At the Judgment many will tell me, `Lord, Lord, we told others about you and used your name to cast out demons and to do many other great miracles.' 23 But I will reply, `You have never been mine. Go away, for your deeds are evil.'

What's wrong with being inspired by what is good and admirable in a book and skipping over the boring, useless, nonsensical, outdated, irrelevant, and immoral bits? I think it's a good idea, myself. Those who say the Bible is "all good" haven't read it.

like you this bothers me,but I cant say anything about other factions of christianity becuse they arent the same beliefs as mine(I'm Catholic) and I too am guilty of not always following the path, but its not my position to judge,do I think its wrong to pick and choose...Yes,I also believe its wrong to openly try to push my opinion of religion on someone else that doesnt want to hear it..they must choose when their ready and its not up to me to push them in any way
