I heard about something on the Bible Answerman (Hank Hanegraaf's show) that Joyce Meyer teaches that Jesus went to hell to defeat the devil. Where is her basis for this in the Bible?

If Jesus defeated the devil. Then we would not need Him now for redemption. Why would we? There is no devil. Right?

Jesus does defeat Satan, AFTER the Rapture & Revelation.

.I listen to Joyce Meyer at times. However, I believe they might put a little toooo much hair spray on at times.

The fumes may have a interaction, with her thought process.

I think she's confusing her scripture. Actually , Jesus defeated the devil while living, by proving faithful to his Father even to death. Now some scriptures , such as Acts 2; 31 mention he was in hell, but saw no corruption. We know he was dead for parts of 3 days and then his body disappeared. The only scripture that might have given her that impression is at 1 Peter 3; 19 " In this state also he went his way and preached to the spirits in prison. " ( talking about the demons who were punished after the flood in Noah's day.)

Jesus went to the cross & defeated the devil. Revelation chapter 1 verse 18. Jesus was speaking &said, "I am He that liveth, & was dead;and, behold,I am alive for evermore,Amen;and have the keys of hell and of death. Jesus asended to heaven after He was crucified, then He decended to the lower parts of hell & took the keys from satan. the last thing to be conchored here on earth is death.
Joyce Meyer has good books out, along with Perry Stone, John Hagee. you might want to check at your book store,i know wal-mart carries a line of good christian books but the best to study from is your Bible..it's our roadmap to heaven...just start with any word that you want to find out about & start running references on it..you will be amazed how exciting that is when you find all the answers in your Bible..

no longer something particular. church buildings consistently choose for to administration human beings's sexuality. The greater controlling a church is, the greater it needs to be on your private mattress room staring at. The greater that's controlled via adult males without enter from women, the greater serious the administration gets. The greater to blame you sense, the greater submissive you get. it extremely is extremely a racket. The greater you attempt to suppress typical human sexuality rather of channel it, the greater good you're able to desire to combat it. that's an indication you're doing something incorrect, despite the fact that it extremely is not any longer an argument of the devil, yet of attempting too difficult to combat biology. that's gloomy to computer screen human beings caught up in this cycle.

I don't know of anything in the bible like that, although it wouldn't put it past being in one of the epistles.

I do know that the creed Catholics used to recite included the line that Jesus "decended into hell." It might have come from the same source as Meyer's teaching.

That is not scriptural. Not one bit. Jesus defeated the devil by his sacrifice for us. I have a lot if issues with the things Joyce Meyer says. I know folks who love her stuff. But she just gets WAY too creative with her theology.

One, God created hell FOR the devil and his angels, Two, Yeshua defeated the sin that held us back from our Father, once that barrier was taken away, satan had no weapons left, because once you recieve the gift of Salvation, like all Gods gifts and promises, they are irrecovable, as paul said; No height or depth or principalities or powers can take us from the love of God through Yeshua the Messiah, take no heed to the likes of myers and co who are only out to sell books, they make great motivational speakers but the only thing that drives them is the bottom line. You are right to question these things though, but in answer to your question, i cant think of one biblical reference about what you asked, its a bit like the rapture theories that get banded about, Jesus said plainly that we are going through the fire in mathew 24, but will they listen? No. because it sells book. Yah baruch achoti

1 Peter 3:18-19...

Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison

In the New Testament, it states that while dead Jesus went to hell to free the righteous dead. This is usually interpreted as those who died before he came but followed the law.
