When did Islam start? Im serious. Bcoz the "great" Dr Zakir Naik on his website claims that Islam has been there since time immemorial ever since the first man set foot on earth (but gives no proof there). He also claims that Islam was not started by Muhammed. It is in the FAQ of islam, most common ques asked by hindus. Now if Muhammed made / discovered / invented ( whatever u want to call it ) the concept of allah then what was there before him? I was wondering that before allah whom did muslims worship and what were they called? Did they worship christ before allah? Were they jews? Pagans? Hindus? Whom did the muslims worship? What caused people of Islam to worship different people / gods every few hundred yrs? Why did they change gods so often?
Is there any proof that Islam was there before Muhammed?

Hi I know most people have already answered the questions in some ways and forms, but I thought I'd add that yes, Islaam was before Muhammad. If you read the transliteration of the qur'aan, within it you'll hear stories of the prophets. About how they were Muslims (but christians believe they were christians. And Jews believe they were Jewish).
Also, Muslims never worshiped anyone other than God. And you said "what caused people to worship different people/gods every few hundred years. why did they change gods so often?" I'm honestly not sure what you mean when you say that because it sounds fabricated. Muslims don't worship people or idols. Ever. If they do then they are not Muslims. The basic meaning of being a Muslims is that you believe in One God (who has no partners or son) and that Muhammad was the LAST Prophet. Last being that he was the last one to be given the message of Islaam -- to spread to the rest of the Muslims.
So yes, Islaam was there since Adam, as we believe he was the first Prophet. This probably isn't a very good answer. But in all honestly, the answers are in the qur'aan.

Islam started 1440 years ago. Prophet Abraham was order by God to build the Kaba for Muslims to visit once a year (not compulsary-only if they can) that does not mean Islam was there when Abraham was alive. When Mohammed was told by the Angel Gabriel that God is the Creator of all things AND tell your people not to worship idols, this was the start of Islam. Yes there was Jews and Christians at the time.
Who said Muslims are changing gods so often? my dear friends this is not very kind to say (I am using mild phrases as I do not attack others for no reason)...Last but not least, no Islam before Mohammed.
By the way, the Quran says (God says) "If the ignorant talk to you, say peace" meaning if you/anyone are attacking us and refuse to understand (some enjoy attacking others), we must say PEACE.

Oh wow, where do i even begin. I understand that you are allowed to ask questions on this site, but honestly, you should know a bit about something before you ask. So here's a lengthy answer.
Islam started after Christianity. Allah is God. There is no difference. Think of Allah as the Arab word for God. First was Judaism, then Christianity, then Islam. They all branch off Judaism. Islam started as much by Mohammed as Christianity was started by Jesus. Mohammad received the word of God from the angel Gabrielle and wrote the Koran based on that, then spread the word of God. People of Islam have never worshiped different gods. You are confusing that with people of the Middle East. Before Islam, people of the Middle East beleived in different religions depending on where they were from. Some didnt even have a religion.
Islam wasnt there before Mohammad, just as Christianity wasnt there before Jesus.

Islam means the submission to God. Allah is the Arabic word for God, meaning one God or The God. A person who believes in the God and follows his books and Prophets are called Muslims. We believe that all the prophets were sent with this message, the belief in one God and only one God. Muhammad was the last prophet till the end of time. All Prophets were sent for their nation, but the last prophet Muhammad was sent for all of mankind. So yes Islam was before Muhammad.

aall the prophets wether it be Adam noah abraham moses jesus or Muhammad (peace be upon all of them) called the ppl of their times to worship ONE TRUE GOD.. that is ALLAH ..
that is from the time of ADAM...
al the prophets called to the same teachings but the ppl ;ater on changed them.. for eg the concept of trinity wasnt in the original bible.. torah also has been changed soo much.. but Quran is the same as it was on the day of its REVELATION!!
